Reformer Pilates Information

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a contemporary, full body exercise system designed by the legendary physical trainer, Joseph Pilates. It consists of a series of controlled movement performed on an apparatus called a Reformer. Since Pilates involves no bouncing on joints, jarring bones, or wear and tear on ligaments and joints it is the ideal form of exercise.

The midsection of our body is our powerhouse, and every exercise in Pilates involves strengthening our abdominals and promoting a healthy spine. Our midsection needs to have strength, flexibility, balance, and the functionality to move well and properly. If we are missing a link, another muscle or body part may take over, consequently causing injuries.

When there is more muscle support to the spine, we are creating more space between each vertebra, therefore transforming our spine from a stiff poll to a string of pearls. This will make you appear and feel taller, give you more ease of movement, and even prevent degenerative spinal problems. Pilates also promotes body awareness. How you sit, stand, and move affects your muscles. For example, your neck pain could be caused from how you sit at work or sleep at night. Using the Pilates exercises, you will learn body symmetry and we will work the whole body in synergy.

What is a Reformer?

Despite the seemingly uninviting name, the Pilates Reformer is an incredibly graceful machine that provides finely tuned exercise resistance to generate smooth muscular contraction, building strength without bulk. Using springs, straps, and pulleys, this extremely versatile apparatus can allow hundreds of different exercises.

Who should use Pilates?

Pilates is truly an exercise for everyone. Old or young, sedentary or athletic, every person can benefit from Pilates. Since sessions are one on one, we can customize your session to get the advantage that you need, whether you would like overall body toning, or help with spinal articulation.

Dancers are especially well suited for Reformer Pilates. Using specific exercises, we can increase flexibility, strengthen muscles for jumps and leaps, and even help to prevent injuries.
